Guides
Whether a device stays in daily use or ends up in a drawer after two weeks comes down to six questions. Here are the answers, without sales language and without promises nobody keeps.
1. Which draw style suits you
The first decision is not the brand or the wattage, it is how you draw. There are two, and in practice they rule each other out.
MTL means mouth to lung: into the mouth first, held for a moment, then inhaled. That is exactly how a cigarette is smoked, which is why this design works best for anyone making the switch. The draw is tight, the vapour modest, the device quiet. The devices built for it are under MTL devices.
DTL means direct to lung, straight into the chest like a shisha pull. The draw is open, the vapour heavy, and liquid consumption is far higher. It needs a low resistance, real wattage and a low nicotine strength. Those devices are under box mods.
The most common bad purchase starts right here. Someone coming off cigarettes buys a DTL device because it sounds more serious, gets a draw like breathing through a pipe and a liquid that never satisfies, and is back on the pack within three days. Draw style decides more than any line on a spec sheet.
2. Resistance and wattage
Coil resistance in ohms sets how much current flows, how hard the wire heats and how much vapour forms. It is the single most important number in the kit and the one most often skipped.
Roughly: above 1.0 Ω is MTL territory, running around ten to fifteen watts, nicotine salts. 0.6 to 1.0 Ω is the crossover, about fifteen to twenty-five watts, a little more vapour and more flavour. Below 0.5 Ω is DTL, thirty watts and up, and it needs a low-strength liquid.
Every coil has its recommended range printed on it. Going above it does not improve flavour: it burns the cotton faster and ends in a scorched taste that no amount of rinsing removes. Going far below it gives a thin, cold draw.
The wattage printed on a device is the ceiling of its circuit, not a recommendation. A 220 W device is no better than a 40 W one if both run the same coil at 22 W. Far more interesting is where a device starts regulating: one that only begins at 20 W is no use for MTL.
3. VOOPOO cartridge platforms
This is where most money is lost on repeat purchases. VOOPOO runs several systems side by side, they look alike, and they do not fit each other.
PnP is the oldest and most widely used platform. It carries much of the Drag and Vinci ranges and many Argus devices. Coils push in rather than screw in.
PnP X is the later generation with a wider airway, built for a more open draw. Despite the name it is not mechanically interchangeable with original PnP. That is the single most common mix-up in the whole range.
ITO serves the Doric range and several compact devices. ITO cartridges usually sit between 0.7 and 1.2 Ω, aimed at mouth-to-lung.
Dedicated cartridges sit in the Argus P models and the Vmate range. They fit only their own family.
The practical takeaway: when buying a second device, check whether it uses the same platform as the first. If it does, both share one stock of consumables. If it does not, you are running two separate supplies and the one you need is never the one in the drawer. Every product page states which unit fits, and everything we stock is under cartridges and coils.
4. How long a coil lasts and how to tell it is done
In MTL usually one to three weeks; in DTL often only a few days, because far more liquid passes through it. There is no fixed number, because the liquid matters more than the device.
Sweet, high-sugar flavourings and heavily coloured liquids clog cotton quickly. Clean tobacco and menthol blends are much gentler. A coil that lasts three weeks on one liquid can die in four days on another.
The end announces itself in three stages: flavour goes flat, then slightly bitter, then scorched. Once it turns bitter, neither rinsing nor drying helps. Pushing on only ruins the taste of the next liquid.
By far the most common cause of a coil dying early is firing it too soon. A fresh cartridge needs five minutes after filling for the cotton to soak. Fire it immediately and you scorch it, and that taste stays until you replace it.
5. Nicotine strength
Too little nicotine is the most common reason a switch fails. You vape more, still feel unsatisfied, and eventually go back to the pack.
As a rough guide, not a prescription: someone who smoked around twenty a day usually lands on nicotine salts around twenty milligrams. At ten a day, more like ten. After a few weeks you can come down, but starting too low is worse than starting too high.
Salt or freebase is a question of device, not taste. Salt stays smooth even at twenty milligrams and suits tight-draw MTL hardware. Freebase at the same strength scratches noticeably, which is why it is used at low strengths on DTL devices where the larger vapour volume compensates.
Twenty milligrams of salt on a DTL device with a 0.15 Ω coil would be a genuinely unpleasant experience. It is the second most common beginner mistake after firing a dry coil. We do not sell liquid; that is what local shops are for.
6. Battery, charging and safety
With built-in batteries there is little to watch: charge over USB-C, try not to run to empty, and do not leave a full device in direct sun. After a year or two the cell weakens and the device weakens with it.
With removable cells, meaning 18650 and 21700, three rules apply and none are optional. First: a cell with a torn wrap gets replaced, not taped, because a short inside the device is a fire risk. Second: where two cells are used they must be the same type, the same age and charged to the same level. Third: never carry loose cells in a pocket, because coins and keys will bridge the terminals. A two-cell case costs almost nothing.
Cells are not included with any device we ship. In transport they count as dangerous goods and are bought separately. Which devices take a removable cell is stated in the spec table on the model page.
7. Why every tank here holds 2 ml
We stock the European edition of the range, whose refillable tank is capped at 2 ml. It is the same revision of the device for every market we ship to, which is why the warehouse and the spare parts are shared rather than split by country.
This matters when you compare spec sheets. VOOPOO's own listings for the same model often quote 3 ml, 4.5 ml or 5 ml, because those describe a different edition built for a different market. For the goods that actually go in the box, the figure in the spec table on our product page is the one that counts.
A smaller tank means refilling more often and nothing else. It does not affect flavour, coil life or battery runtime.
8. The five mistakes that cost the most
Firing straight after filling. Five minutes of patience and the coil runs clean for weeks instead of hours.
Buying the wrong platform. PnP and PnP X look alike and do not fit each other. Check the product page before paying.
Running above the recommended range. More watts is not more flavour, it is a shorter coil life.
Nicotine too low at the start. If it does not satisfy you, you vape more and are still unsatisfied.
Choosing on size alone. Too big and it stays home, too small and it is on the cable by noon. Either way you find out after a week, not at unboxing.
What this guide does not claim
We do not claim that vaping is safe and we do not sell it as a way to quit smoking. That is not a shop's role and it is regulated advertising. We describe the hardware only: how it works, what fits what, and where people most often go wrong.
We sell to adults only. If you do not smoke and do not use nicotine, there is no reason to start.
Where to go next
If you already know which type suits you, go straight to the selection: MTL devices, compact devices, pod kits or box mods.
If you are after a particular range, it is here: VOOPOO Argus, VOOPOO Drag, VOOPOO Vinci, VOOPOO Doric and VOOPOO Vmate. The full range is under VOOPOO in the shop, consumables under cartridges and coils.
FAQ
Which VOOPOO device is best for switching from cigarettes?
An MTL device with a tight draw, a coil above 1.0 Ω and nicotine salts. The type of build matters more than the brand or the wattage: an open DTL draw feels unnatural to a smoker, and that is where most people give up on the device.
Do PnP and PnP X cartridges fit each other?
No. Despite the similar name the two platforms are not mechanically interchangeable. PnP X has a wider airway and is meant for a more open draw. Every product page states which unit that device takes.
How long does a coil last?
One to three weeks mouth-to-lung, often only a few days direct-to-lung. The liquid decides: sweet and heavily coloured flavours clog cotton far faster than clean tobacco or menthol.
Why do all the tanks hold only 2 ml?
We stock the European edition of the range, where the refillable tank is capped at 2 ml, and it is the same revision for every market we ship to. Spec sheets quoting 3 ml or 5 ml describe a different edition. Capacity does not affect flavour or coil life, only how often you refill.
What nicotine strength should I start on?
As a guide: around twenty a day suggests nicotine salts near twenty milligrams, ten a day nearer ten. Starting too low is the most common reason a switch fails, because you vape more and still are not satisfied.
Are batteries included?
No. On devices using removable 18650 or 21700 cells the cell is not included, because in transport it counts as dangerous goods. Each model page states whether a removable cell is needed.
